Great Barrier Reef · Southern Coral Sea

Where the only signal is the tide.

A solar-powered coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, home to nine tents and never more than eighteen guests.

Explore the island

Some places ask you to do more. Wilson Island asks you to do less.

Five and a quarter acres of sand and Pisonia forest, ringed by living coral and held under marine national park protection. There are no roads, no screens, and no reception bars to chase.

There is a chef, a king bed beneath canvas, and the reef beginning a few steps from your deck. You arrive as a guest of the island, and for a few days you let it set the pace.

The Cay

A whole island, rounded to eighteen.

Wilson sits roughly eighty kilometres off Gladstone, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, reachable only by a short crossing from neighbouring Heron Island. The footprint is small enough to walk in minutes and quiet enough that the loudest thing most afternoons is the surf. Book a single tent among the trees, or reserve the entire island and share it with no one but your own party.

The Tents

Nine tents. Canvas outside, considered within.

Each Reef Safari Tent is tucked into the Pisonia canopy on its own elevated timber deck, angled to the water and far enough from the next that you will rarely see it. Inside: a king bed dressed in organic bamboo and cotton, soft light after dark, and the windows open to whichever way the breeze is running.

  • Private elevated deckUninterrupted reef views, raised into the canopy.
  • Solar USB chargingPowered by the sun. No mains power, and that is deliberate.

No phones. No televisions. No wifi. That part is the point.

The Longhouse

All of it, included. Most of it, Australian.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are taken in the open-sided Longhouse or carried off to a quiet stretch of beach, depending on the mood of the day. The kitchen leans almost entirely on Australian growers and makers, from the produce to the spirits, and pairs each dinner with something worth lingering over.

A strict allergy policy applies. Please tell us before booking if that affects you.

See & Do

Everything here is included, and most of it is underwater.

There is no diving and no jet anything. There is a reef that starts at the shoreline and a sky that cities forgot.

Snorkel the shelf

Drift straight off the beach into living coral, world class and a few steps from your tent.

Reef walks

Explore the flats at low tide with a guide who knows what is living in every pool.

Birdlife

Wilson is a working seabird sanctuary. Bring patience, and leave the drone at home.

Turtle season

Nesting and hatching in the warmer months, watched quietly from a respectful distance.

After dark

No light pollution and no screens means the kind of night sky that is genuinely hard to find.

Citizen science

Log what you see for Eye on the Reef and iNaturalist, and leave the place better recorded.

Light Footprint

Certified to tread lightly, closed when the island needs it.

Wilson runs entirely on sun and batteries, holds Advanced Ecotourism certification from Ecotourism Australia, and furnishes its tents with organic linen, reclaimed timber and glassware upcycled from old wine bottles. Cleaning is biodegradable, sourcing is local, and fresh water is precious enough that we ask you to use it as if it were.

The annual close

Every year from 1 February to 1 April, we close the island completely and hand it back to the nesting birds and turtles.

The Passage

There is one way in, and it is half the pleasure.

Wilson can only be reached through neighbouring Heron Island, so the journey becomes part of the stay rather than a chore to get through.

01

Arrive in Gladstone

Fly via Brisbane with Qantas or Virgin Australia, or take the coast road. Gladstone is the gateway to the southern reef.

02

Cross to Heron Island

By launch from Gladstone Marina, around two hours, or by a thirty minute scenic helicopter flight.

03

Step across to Wilson

A short boat transfer, landed bow first onto the sand, scheduled around the tide for the gentlest possible arrival.

Transfers move with the weather and the tide, so we build in a little room to breathe.
