Website Design Concept
Heron Island Resort
Snorkelling starts from the sand on this coral cay, so our concept puts the water ahead of everything else, rooms included.
This is a design concept: a website we designed as a proposal for Heron Island Resort. It was not commissioned, and West Coast Media Solutions is not affiliated with Heron Island Resort.
At a Glance
Heron Island is a coral cay on the Tropic of Capricorn, about 80 km off Gladstone, with Heron Reef on one side and Wistari Reef on the other. Our one-page concept puts the reef first: island facts, then snorkelling, diving, turtles and guided programs, then rooms in the Pisonia forest, offers, the crossing by sea or air, and an enquiry form.

The Brief
Here the reef is the main event rather than an add-on, so the concept had to get a visitor into the water before showing them a bed.
- Show how close the reef is: wade in from the beach, with two reefs within easy reach.
- Present snorkelling, diving, turtles, tours, dining and events as one set of experiences starting at the shoreline.
- Bring in four room types, from the Turtle Room to the Beach House, after the reef has been shown.
- Explain the two ways to arrive, catamaran or seaplane, and collect enquiries with dates and interests.
What We Designed
The hero line, Step off the sand, and onto the reef, is set in Fraunces above a short promise of turquoise water, nesting turtles and fish a few steps from the room, with Book your stay and Explore the island beneath it and a Dive in cue to scroll. Four fact cards follow, covering the two reefs, the distance offshore, the turtle nesting season and the choice of boat or seaplane.
The palette takes its cues from the cay: warm sand for the background, deep ocean teal for text and coral orange for buttons, with Manrope keeping the body copy light and modern. The experiences section opens with the Great Barrier Reef itself, described at more length, before six shorter cards that each end in an active link such as Float over coral or Meet them. Rooms come later, under a heading that places them in the Pisonia forest.
Island essentials
Four short cards answer where the island sits, which reefs surround it, when turtles nest and how to get there.
Experience cards
Reef, snorkelling, diving, turtles, tours, dining and events, each with its own action-led link.
Rooms in the forest
Turtle Room, Reef Room, Wistari Suite and Beach House grouped under one Pisonia forest heading.
Two ways across
By sea and by air set out together: the catamaran from Gladstone Marina or a seaplane transfer.
How We Achieved It
The menu stays short, with stay, experiences, the reef, offers and contact before Book now, and the reef earns a menu item of its own. Offers sit under Reasons to come sooner and cover an island escape, a longer-stay saving and a local offer, so incentives appear only after the island has made its case. The copy keeps to short, sensory lines, which makes a long page calm to read.
The enquiry section, Talk to the island, asks for travel dates and an area of interest from a dropdown, so a diver and a couple on a quiet escape can be answered differently. The form has spam protection. The footer groups links into stay, experiences and visit, and includes an accessibility link beside privacy, cookies and legal pages.
