At a Glance

Okanagan Winery Map is our own directory of British Columbia wineries, built around an interactive map of the valley. It lists 189 wineries across 15 regions, from Lake Country in the north to Osoyoos in the desert south and beyond to the Similkameen, Shuswap and Kootenays, with tasting room hours, fees, varietals and directions. Visitors can search, filter by any of 50 varietals or tap a region on the map.

The Brief

Wine country is a map problem before it is a reading problem. Our aim was to let someone take in the whole valley at once, pick a region and land on the right tasting rooms.

  • Make the valley map the main way in, with every region marked and counted.
  • Let visitors search the directory or filter it by varietal, from Riesling to Pinot Noir.
  • Give each winery its tasting room hours, fees, varietals and directions in one listing.
  • Ask for location and legal drinking age before entry, since the site covers alcoholic beverages.

What We Designed

Before anything else, a welcome screen asks for the visitor's location and confirms they are of legal drinking age, with the age set by region. Past it, the page opens on Explore Every Okanagan Winery, three headline figures (wineries, regions, varietals) and the map itself: lakes, Highway 97 and Highway 3 drawn in, regions marked with their winery counts, and a strip of regions to scroll beneath.

Fraunces, a soft, old-style serif, gives the guide its character, and Nunito Sans keeps listings and labels easy to read. The palette is warm parchment with deep brown text, closer to a wine label than a tourism brochure, so the map feels like one you might unfold on the passenger seat. The site is written in Canadian English, as suits a guide to BC wine country.

Interactive valley map

Tap any of the 15 regions on the map to jump to its wineries, with a winery count on each marker.

Varietal filter

Narrow the list to wineries making a particular varietal, from Auxerrois and Riesling to Syrah and Zweigelt.

Region by region

Fifteen regions, from Naramata Bench and Oliver to Lillooet and the Kootenays, each with its own winery list.

Age and location check

An entry screen confirms legal drinking age by region and notes that the site does not sell alcohol.

How We Achieved It

Map, search, varietal filter and all 189 listings share a single self-contained HTML page, built to our standard. Tapping a region, running a search or choosing a varietal all happen in place, which keeps a visitor oriented in the valley instead of bouncing between pages. Each listing carries tasting room hours, fees, varietals and directions, so the next step is always clear.

A footer note reminds visitors that hours and availability may vary with the seasons and asks them to confirm with each winery before visiting. Five legal overlays cover privacy, cookies, legal terms, accessibility and terms of use, and the contact form and newsletter signup, which promises seasonal winery updates and new additions, are protected against spam with Google reCAPTCHA.
